Though landmines and cluster munitions are indiscriminate weapons, their impact and consequences are different for women, girls, boys and men. Gender and diversity influence the role an individual plays in their community and in its social and economic activities. Gender and diversity also affect  the likelihood of a person becoming a victim of a landmine or cluster munition, and their ability to access medical treatment, risk education, and other services.

Understanding different people’s experiences, capacities, and vulnerabilities will allow states to better address the needs and protect the rights of individuals and affected communities, in the implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention of Cluster Munitions.

For more information and resources on incorporating gender and diversity in mine action, see the dedicated web page of the Gender and Diversity Working Group, of which the ICBL-CMC is a contributing member.
